Lighting

Lighting our buildings costs around £0.5 million per annum.  Lighting is the most visible type of energy waste – how many times have you walked past a room with the lights on or seen the Tower lit up when you are out at night? Switching off lights when they are not needed not only reduces carbon emissions but also improves the image of the University.

We can all do something to help.

Think about whether you need the lights on. Often we walk into rooms and turn on all the lights without thinking if there is enough natural daylight or not.

Switch off lights whenever leaving an area unoccupied.

If you are in an open plan office, agree who will switch off lights.

Label switches so you know what each one does.  If there is a bank of switches people are not likely to want to turn them off unless they know what they do.

If a light fails report it to the Estates Helpdesk.
