What can I do?

There are plenty of things you can do to make a difference. Most of them will save you a few pounds in the process.

Close windows at night. A typical window left open overnight in winter will waste enough energy to drive a small car over 35 miles.

Turn off lights when you leave an office/lecture theatre. Office lights left on overnight use enough energy in a year to heat a home for almost 5 months.

Turn off air conditioning when you leave. Air conditioning an office for one extra hour a day uses enough energy in a month to power a TV for over a year.

Report any dripping taps – a dripping tap wastes enough water to fill a paddling pool every week for the whole summer.

Report flickering lights – a flickering light uses electricity just to irritate you.

Turn off your monitor when you go for lunch or finish using your computer.  If all the monitors in the University were turned off for just one hour a day it would save enough electricity to power 21 houses.

Switching off all the monitors overnight will save enough to microwave 47,100 dinners.

When you shut down your computer make sure the monitor is turned off too (a flashing white light underneath the monitor logo indicates its still on) as some computers don’t shut down the monitors totally.
