Studio VisCom 02: Ellipsis

Self-portrait, by Ulises Carrión

Studio brief

What is publishing? How does print communicate? Where are the edges of the page? How can words become pictures and pictures become words? In this studio we explore the materiality of printed communication; we test the tools and processes used to communicate visually on the page. Like mechanics taking an engine apart, we will strip down the formats of printed and published communication to understand what they are made of and how they operate (and get dirty in the process).

Our first project gets down to basics to explore printed reproduction – how is paper made? What can ink do? Together we’ll construct a bible of materials, process and print.

For the second project we'll collaborate with writers to visualise their words, then print and publish an illustrated anthology of creative and critical writing.

During the final project, Ellipsis becomes a mini publishing empire – everyone will make and publish a launch issue of a new magazine.

An ellipsis is a 'dot-dot-dot'; the most basic visual form repeated three times to symbolise more than can be written. It is a bridge between verbal and visual communication, and the promise of something more to come...
