FAQ for the RTP

Will my overseas teaching qualifications count?

You need to contact NARIC and give them details of your qualifications and they will issue you with a letter stating equivalence which you will need to bring along to an interview.

Do I need a work permit or visa?

You must check with the Home Office if you require a work permit or visa but it must expire after the two year course in order to be eligible.

How often must I attend University?

Attendance is one day a week either a Tuesday or Thursday each semester for 12 sessions. Attendance at all sessions is expected and there are two semesters a year.

Can I do the RTP in less than two years?

Not at Londonmet University.

Do I have to be employed in a school prior to applying?

Yes. The RTP is employment based and requires you to be employed in some capacity at a school or Early Years Unit prior to application. Once on the course you will become an Unqualified teacher.

How much teaching is expected in the first year and subsequent years?

This will vary depending on prior experience but a recommended guideline will be issued at the Initial Audit. It is normally progressive ranging from possibly a day a week in the first term to four days a week by the end of the course.

What qualification will I gain?

A BA Hons in Education with QTS. It is possible to obtain a BA Hons without QTS

When can I do the TDA Skills tests?

These can be taken at any time as from the October in the first year. It is necessary to pass all three tests in English, mathematics and ICT before the end of the course in order to achieve QTS.

How much will I earn?

The TDA recommendation is at least on Point 0 of the Unqualified Teachers pay scale.

Is it possible to have a break from study?

It is possible to intermit and commence the course at a later date. Your place is normally held open for two years or another interview for a place may be necessary.

What if I change school over the two years?

It is possible to change schools but another application will be necessary and an Initial Audit of the new school will also be necessary.

Does the mentor have to attend Mentor training?

YES, all mentors must attend mentor training. They shall obtain London Providers Stage 1 mentor training (6 hours available at London Metropolitan University), or if experienced, attend a one-day training session in the first term of the programme..

What is a Training Plan?

RTP students will be required to have a termly training plan, drawn up by the mentor and the student towards the end of each term. This will focus on areas, and probably Standards, that particularly need to be worked on in the following term.
