Applications for funding
The funding support team can provide advice on funders' terms and conditions, and on completion and submission of forms, both paper and online.
An increasing number of funders now operate web-based submission systems, including RCUK’s  Je-S (joint e-submission) system, the Royal Society's e-GAP (electronic grant application and processing) and the MRC's EAA (electronic application and assessment). Most of these systems require users to register before beginning applications. This can be done through their websites. Most also incorporate a "submitter stage" as part of their submission processes whereby the application can be submitted by the applicant to London Met's funding support team for checking before being submitted to the funder. It is vital that applicants allow sufficient time for checking before final submission. Five working days should be regarded as a minimum.
The funding support team can read proposals and offer advice. However, it is also important for applicants to be familiar with the detailed guidance, rules and regulations produced by the funding bodies.
Costing and pricing
The UK Research Councils, government departments and certain other funders now make awards on the basis of a proportion of the full economic cost (fEC) of a project. Staff should consult the Guidance on the Costing and Pricing of Research Projects at London Met before preparing a bid. In addition, the research councils have produced a very useful set of frequently asked questions on fEC which can be found here [http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/documents/documents/fecFAQ.pdf]. Funders' own documentation will usually provide guidance on eligible costs and means of calculation, and applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these when planning an application.
The funding support team in conjunction with colleagues in the Finance Office and in the Faculties can provide advice on the costing and pricing of grant applications.
All costings for a bid must be reviewed by one of the University's costing and pricing accountants before an application is submitted to a funder. It is very important that applicants take account of the time that this might take when planning applications.
Approving and submitting applications
All outgoing applications, without exception, must be approved by the Dean of the applicant's Faculty. This applies not only to bids where London Met is the lead institution, but also to those submitted by colleagues in other universities where London Met staff are co-applicants.
In addition:
All applications with a full economic cost of over £100,000 must be approved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise)
All applications with a full economic cost of over £250,000 must be approved by the Director of Finance
All applications with a full economic cost of over £500,000 must be approved by the Vice-Chancellor
