Postgraduate study

The University offers the opportunity to register for M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees in mathematics, statistics and allied disciplines. The work may be carried out on a full-time or part-time basis. There are usually good opportunities for research students to supplement their income by undertaking tutorials in the department.

Current research interest in mathematics and statistics includes:

Statistical modelling
Generalised linear models
Generalised additive models GAMLSS
Graphical models
Queuing theory
Reliability
Robustness
Algebraic topology; homotopy and homology

The Centre is the lead site for the development (in R) of the GAMLSS software. There is a strong interest in GLIM; in particular, the Centre is currently the lead site for developing GLIM for Windows. The Centre offers a good research environment with access to excellent computing facilities. Students are encouraged to attend the Centre's short course programme, the monthly meetings of the Royal Statistical Society and national and international conferences.

Further details on research opportunities in statistics at UK universities are available from the Committee of Professors of Statistics.
