Irish elders now

The aim of this project is to build a substantial video and oral record of a generation of Irish migrants to Britain (the over-60s) whose stories and experiences of moving here have been under-represented in other official records.

The project is an important part of the current development programme for the Archive of the Irish in Britain. A documentary film entitled, I Only Came Over for a Couple of Years... was produced in 2005 and consists of interviews with a number of Irish elders from London and the Home Counties intercut with footage of the London St. Patrick's Day Parade. These testimonies of coming to London between the 1930s and 1960s constitute a moving and valuable record of a rapidly disappearing section of London's population.

The film can be viewed for free by appointment at the Archive of the Irish in Britain or is available on DVD from the Irish Studies Centre for £10. If you would like to order a copy, please send your name, address, email and telephone number, along with a cheque for £10 made payable to London Metropolitan University to:
