The London European Research Centre, under the Directorship of Professor Michael Newman links academic staff having a range of expertise on European subjects with a focus on social sciences. Its work is based on independent critical approaches with a commitment to the principles of equality, democracy and internationalism.

The Centre's research areas include:
  • European Integration, including its impact on member states, and the external relations of the European Union
  • Interaction between the EU and East Central Europe and the former Soviet Union, including analysis of countries in this region
  • Relationship between the EU, the Mediterranean Basin and the South, with reference both to external relations and the experience of migrant workers within the Union
  • Analysis of specific countries and movements.

LERC Seminars and Conferences

Each year LERC holds a seminar series in which speakers from universities, government and non-governmental organisations discuss their research. In addition, the Centre has held major conferences, often in collaboration with other organisations.

LERC currently has collaborative research programmes with Kharkiv University in Ukraine on World Systems theory, with the University of Perugia on Regionalism, and has ongoing collaboration on migration and citizenship with the University Paul Valéry in Montpellier. It also has a research link with the European University Institute in Florence on the subject of 'Allegiance and European Integration' with which it has organised two joint seminars: in Florence in May 2001 on 'Research Approaches to Allegiance in Contemporary Western Europe' and 'Allegiance and EU Enlargement' in December 2002 in London.
