The Impact of Supplementary Schools on Pupils Attainment: An investigation into what factors contribute to educational improvements

Overview:

The Institute for Policy Studies in Education (IPSE) and the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) have been commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families to investigate the impact of supplementary schools on pupils’ mainstream school attainment. The study will investigate the factors which contribute to educational achievement.

This is a national study and will consist of:

• Literature review
• Survey of supplementary schools
• 10 supplementary school case studies (to include headteacher and teacher interviews, pupil and parent focus groups)
• Classroom observations (to identify examples of good practice)
• Interviews with mainstream headteachers
• Interviews with key stakeholders
• Scoping study
