Doctor of Education (EdD)
This innovative, part-time programme is aimed at educational professionals who want to undertake a substantial investigation into an area of current professional practice in education.
Entry requirements
You will normally hold a relevant Master's degree obtained from a UK university or overseas equivalent. You will also have acquired at least three years full-time experience of employment in a relevant professional area.
Studying for the EdD
The course is designed to meet the needs of busy educational professionals, and includes both a taught element and an individual thesis. It is comparable to the PhD in terms of scale and rigour.
The first two years of the programme comprise six-taught modules:
Year 1:
• Education Policy and Social Justice: An Overview (30 credits)
• Introduction to Theories and Methods as an Educational Researcher: Research Methodology Part 1 (30 credits)
• Evaluating Research and Reflecting on Practice (30 credits)
Year 2:
• Policy, Practice and Social Justice in Educational Institutions (30 credits)
• Research Proposal and Presentation (30 credits)
• Conducting Educational Research: Research Methodology Part 2 (30 credits)
These are taught through one intensive 2 day session (Friday and Saturday) and 3 evening seminar groups each term, in addition to one to one tutorial support. There will be an opportunity to work with groups of colleagues with similar interests/backgrounds.
From Year 3, students will be working on their thesis of 40 - 50,000 words individually supervised by joint supervisors (360 credits).
The minimum time to complete the programme is four years.
