About Us

The International Institute for Culture, Tourism and Development (IICTD) was established by London Metropolitan University, formerly the University of North London, in 2001. One of the largest research centres of its kind in the world, it brings together over 20 staff working locally and globally on a range of pure and applied research, consultancy and commissioned studies.

The Institute aims to provide an up-to-date analysis of current trends, issues and research in culture, tourism and development, in particular an interdisciplinary approach to the assessment, development and management of resources and policy formation.

Caribbean Studies Centre
Affiliated to the IICTD, the Caribbean Studies Centre was estabished in 2002, building on the success of the longstanding programme in Caribbean Studies offered at the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University), the only such programme on offer in the UK.

What is our Link with CELTS ?

The Institute builds on the work of the Centre for Leisure and Tourism Studies (CELTS), an independent research centre specialising in the study of tourism and leisure based at the London Metropolitan University. Established in 1986, CELTS has undertaken a wide range of pure and applied research and consultancy in all aspects of leisure and tourism.

A number of related areas of research expertise also exist at the London Metropolitan University, including Sports Cultures, Cultural Economics and Caribbean Studies. In recognition of this widening international scope and excellence it was decided to form an umbrella Research Institute which would incorporate these related research groupings.
