The Institute for Health Research and Policy was created shortly after the formation of the new university (2003).
It brings together staff from Departments of Health and Human Sciences and Education. Institute members are engaged in a wide range of projects, focusing on the following research areas.
- Intervention strategies for managing weight loss in obese populations.
- Maternal nutrition and the outcome of pregnancy.
- A joint initiative with the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition and the Mother & Baby Clinic (East End, London).
- Isolation and characterisation de novo of natural therapies from plant sources.
- Design and synthesis of biomedical probes.
- Evasion of immune response by HIV.
- Molecular studies on diseases linked to iron and copper imbalance.
