Through the development of my academic work and architectural practice I have sought to make explicit the idea of design as process. My interest lies in the social, and technical factors which influence the production and sustainability of the built environment. These ideas began with my work in the shanty towns of Ghana and Southern Sudan and have been adapted and developed in the context of my London practice. Here projects have included new, rehabilitated and conserved buildings for a number of long standing private, commercial and institutional clients. Theoretical ideas have been developed through academic work so that teaching and practice have informed one another. Ideas concerning the social and scientific variables which affect the built fabric and their relationship to the process of design are covered in my first book Culture, Cash and Housing (1992). Ideas relating the building process (the culture of making buildings) to education are explored in my second book The Lemonade Stand (1998).
