Dr. Marilyn Freeman, B.A. (Hons) LL.M, PhD (King's College, London) is Reader in Family and Child Law at London Metropolitan University, where, for many years, she has specialised in child law. Although not currently in practice at the Bar, she retains a door tenancy at a leading set of family law chambers.
Her research interests extend to various aspects of child law but, in particular, that of international child abduction. She has been regularly invited to international fora to deliver papers on this topic and is a member of the Legal Working Group of the All Party Parliamentary Committee on International Child Abduction.
She is Head of the Research Unit of Reunite, the International Child Abduction Centre, and is an Associate of the Programme on the International Rights of the Child (Queen Mary College, London). During a period as a research scholar at UTS (Sydney) she completed a 2-year research project on behalf of reunite into the Outcomes for Children Returned Following an Abduction, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and subsequently conducted a project on behalf of reunite, funded by the Department for Constitutional Affairs, investigating the effects of international child abduction.
She has undertaken research on behalf of reunite, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, into the operation of the UK-Pakistan Protocol regarding child abduction between those two countries, and is shortly to commence research for reunite, funded by the Ministry of Justice, into the leave to remove jurisdiction, particularly considering any impact on contact and the issue of international child abduction.
Among her many publications on this matter, she has published a Special Edition of Occasional Papers on the 1980 Hague Child Abduction Convention, International Child Abduction and Related Issues, Part 11, 2002 (see Contemporary Issues Concerning International Child Abduction and the 1980 Hague Child Abduction Convention, reunite, 2002).
