On 1 July 2005 HRSJ hosted the launch of the latest book by Professor Théodore MacDonald, Third World Health: Hostage to First World Wealth (Radcliffe Publishing (Oxford, Seattle) 2005).Prof MacDonald is an associate of HRSJ.
The book is based on Professor MacDonald's many years' experience as a
doctor and as a teacher in some of the World''s poorest nations. It
criticises in depth the present systems used to mediate the
globalization of finance, arguing that institutions such as the World
Bank, IMF and WTO are rendering it increasingly difficult for third
world nations to operate health and education programmes effectively.
The book's foreword is written by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and the
launch was attended by a wide range of participants, including
Archbishop Tutu's representative, the Dean and Provost of Southwark
Cathedral, the overseas officer of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the
cultural attachés of the South African embassy and of the Canadian High
Commission, members of the UK Public Health Association and medical and
health workers and academics from the UK and abroad.
