Intern Testimonials

Sarah Basith, Finance and Administration Intern, Undergraduate at London Metropolitan University, Aug 2010.

"Whilst working at EHRAC I felt as if I was part of the team, and not just an intern. EHRAC has provided me with a unique and invaluable training and practical experience in financial management and administration in a supportive and friendly environment. I have enjoyed my time here and believe that I have made a positive contribution to the excellent work that EHRAC does in striving to build a strong human rights community."

Mo Daifi, Finance and Administration Intern, Accounting and Finance Undergraduate at London Metropolitan University, Aug 2011.

"EHRAC has, in fact, given me the opportunity to use my theoretical knowledge in a practical, real-life setting which has made my course based finance lessons come alive. During my time here I have learnt a lot not only about accounting and financial management ....but key employability skills that I feel will greatly improve my career advancement in the competitive employment market we all face."

Neil Cumming, Translation Intern, University of Bristol, June-September 2011.

"I started translating as an EHRAC volunteer in February 2011, receiving one or two documents a month by email, translating them and sending them back – which in itself was very interesting and certainly improved my Russian. It was always difficult, however, to see a single judgment or letter in the wider context of EHRAC’s work, and so once I had decided to pursue a career as a professional linguist I leapt at the chance to do an in-house placement at the EHRAC office.

During my time here (I’ve been coming in two days a week for around three months) I’ve had the chance to tackle a wide range of documents – correspondences, expert reports, witness statements, court records, contracts, judgments and applications to the European Court of Human Rights – which has given me a good grasp of the Russian legal system and Russian legal terminology. I’ve also done some proofreading, and was given the opportunity to interpret at a three-day Legal Skills Development seminar – which included interpreting for an Azeri delegation to the FCO! (Particularly helpful as I am going to study interpreting.) Being in the office has been infinitely beneficial, as it has allowed me to see how cases progress from the initial stages until a judgment is delivered. Above all, this has been such a positive experience because of the nature of the material encountered, and the feeling that I was able to make a contribution, albeit a small one, to the vital work being done by EHRAC. I feel so much more confident about my abilities than I did when I started, have gained an invaluable insight into the not-for-profit sector, and so would wholeheartedly recommend a placement at EHRAC to anyone. I thoroughly intend to keep working for EHRAC by email, and I’m sure I’ll be back in the office again at some point (if they’ll have me!)."
