EHRAC Litigation

EHRAC’s principal activity is to assist lawyers and NGOs to take cases to the European Court of Human Rights. Together with its partner organisations EHRAC is currently working on around 285 cases against the Russian Federation, Georgia and Azerbaijan in respect of a diverse range of alleged violations including extrajudicial killings and 'disappearances’ in Chechnya, environmental pollution, very poor prison conditions, ethnic discrimination, unfairness in the civil and criminal justice systems, unlawful detention without trial and freedom of expression and association.

At present a majority of the cases which EHRAC is dealing with concern human rights violations in Chechnya, as a result of military action, including the use of force against civilians and illegal detention, ill-treatment and torture. However, EHRAC’s other cases originate from many different regions and cities across Russia, including Cherepovets, Krasnodar and St. Petersburg and from Georgia and Azerbaijan.
