Unit 12

Jo Sharples: Façade Model

About the show

The work of Diploma Unit 12 is focused on the identity and atmosphere of new office buildings with a gothic character.

Diploma Unit 12 has spent the year examining notions of the gothic in architecture in a wide sense. In the spirit of Ruskin’s essay ‘The Nature of Gothic’, we have searched for qualities of savageness, changefulness, redundancy and naturalism in buildings from the past and in our own proposals. Working in Manchester, the students have designed office buildings for institutional clients with sophisticated, representational facades. The designs explore how construction, and in particular craft, can create identity and atmosphere independent of programme.
