Wild Country Remembered By Heather Walsh
Studio led by Gina Pierce & Tracy Hunt
In this Studio, students design and make a fabric collection for fashion and interiors with imagery and materials based on a story they would like to tell.
Each new design gives us the opportunity to tell the world a story - perhaps about ourselves, another culture, or a fantasy of our imagination.
In this project students were first set a brief to be inspired by fables and myths, both urban and historic, as well as figures, buildings, or events that are legendary or personal, to interpret as contemporary design solutions. They examined the storytelling of different cultures, both historical and contemporary, to provide the concept for project work.
The project began by producing their own story book, collecting imagery, materials, drawn and photographic research, collaging and producing a narrative of colour, image and texture, and developed using print, knit, weave or mixed media.
During the project, both traditional and digital methods of design and production were combined, using hand and software generated imagery. They developed their specialist area of textiles, and progressed towards a level of professionalism to work independently within their discipline.
Final year students wrote their own brief for their final major project, producing collections for fabrics for fashion or interiors, specialising in knit, print and mixed media. They have been inspired by stories and images from around the world, history, and our own back gardens. Botanical illustrations have morphed into giant fantasy plants, rural landscapes have been etched with memories, the love story of the Taj Mahal translated into stitch and print, and musical instruments into furnishings.
Second year students have produced fabric collections for both Marks and Spencer home wares, and for M & S Woman, with successful students offered work placements in the head office.
The students’ stories are communicated through this range of innovative and beautiful fabric designs presented in the Studio final year show.
