A new home for London Met's Students' Union

London Metropolitan University has invested £1.2 million in the creation of a new home for its Students’ Union (SU).

Date: 29 September 2017

With an investment of £1.2 million London Met's Students' Union (SU) is to be relocated to a newly refurbished Harglenis Building located at the Holloway campus by the end of 2017.

This represents a key phase in the One Campus, One Community (OCOC) masterplan, which will give the Union its very own building for the first time in its entire history.

The SU is currently located in J Block, an area of the Holloway campus that is to be transformed into a teaching and learning centre in summer 2019.

The move of the Union to Harglenis comes with a host of benefits that include new vibrant office spaces, committee rooms, and a brand new radio booth for the SU’s Verve Radio station.

Harglenis will be completely remodelled with its ground floor being transformed into a student-inspired flexible space, equipped to support the large variety of Union activities. The renovated space will see the installation of a new kitchen, digital screens, advocacy rooms and a disabled restroom facility to ensure accessibility.

The Students’ Union have welcomed the news and have played an active role in plans for their new home. Florence Onwumere, SU Officer for both the School of Human Sciences and the School of Computing and Digital Media, said: “I’m excited about the move. Being based in an environment that is really accessible will allow us to make students feel more at home.”

SU Officer for the Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design, Georgia Robinson added: “Having a space that we own will create such a great atmosphere. The new space will enable us to better facilitate the needs of students, allowing them to find it easier to engage with us.”

Mark Boansi, SU Officer for the schools of Social Sciences and Social Professions said: “The current SU space is very corporate, but we are pleased to see that our new home in Harglenis creates a more student-friendly, modern environment for better student engagement.”

SU President and Officer for the Guildhall School of Business and Law, Tunde Toki, said: “Harglenis provides a great space for the Students’ Union. We wanted a space that would accommodate interactive student activity – a space where various student groups, such as our sports teams and societies, could have their own space to meet.

We are so pleased that we were able to contribute to the design of our new home. This move will really allow us to show our independence.”

One of the key goals of this exciting project is to enhance the student experience by providing better facilities and giving students a more accessible, energetic space to call their own. Students will benefit from a brand new space that is vibrant, visible and far more advanced.
