Design concepts for the new courtyard
The new courtyard
As part of One Campus, One Community (OCOC) we are creating a large, vibrant plaza at the heart of the Islington campus for the enjoyment of students, staff and our local neighbours.
The current central courtyard will be expanded and transformed following the removal of some of our current buildings which are situated on either side of the Graduate Centre. New routes will be created across the campus, making it easier to navigate.
Appointed to design the space is the renowned landscape architecture practice Gustafson Porter + Bowman (GP+B), whose work includes Swiss Cottage Open Space in Camden, Woolwich Squares in Greenwich, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in London's Hyde Park, and the redevelopment of Nottingham's Old Market Square – winner of 13 awards, including a Civic Trust award and the RIBA CABE Public Space award. GP+B are now working with students, staff and the local community to inform the plans for the new courtyard.
Being one of the largest spaces in Islington, the brand new space will become a cultural hub where open-air events such as food markets, theatre performances and concerts can be held.
Our new courtyard is set to be a landmark in Islington that has the potential to transform not only the campus, but the local area as well.
