Steve Jones is a senior lecturer and course leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) sciences at London Metropolitan University. He has over 20 years' experience of teaching science in London's secondary schools including the roles of head of biology, head of year and head of science. He worked for Redbridge Local Authority as part of the Secondary National Strategy team as a strategy manager for science, working intensively with over 20 schools on school improvement.
Between 2006 and 2011 he held two strategic national leadership roles in science education: managing the Specialist Science Colleges Network and then leading the Specialist Science Colleges Support Programme across England with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust providing training and guidance for school leadership teams on science specialism.
Steve co-led on the key school-to-school partnership aspects related to improving science attainment as part of the highly successful London Challenge Programme. More recently Steve has worked as a consultant deputy headteacher and for the Science Learning Centre (East of England) at the University of Hertfordshire, writing and presenting courses on all aspects of science teaching. He also led on the establishment of two Science Learning Partnerships in the East of England whilst also running his own school improvement consultancy firm.
During Steve's secondary school teaching experiences, he has taught biology and chemistry at A-level plus physics at GCSE level. At London Met, Steve leads the PGCE sciences course training teachers of biology, chemistry and physics. Steve has a particular interest in developing passionate, resilient science teachers who are well-prepared to teach all areas of science successfully at secondary level.
Steve has written for science education publications including the Association for Science Education's School Science Review and edited and wrote leader articles for the Schools, Students and Teachers Network (SSAT) and other specialist science colleges publications.
Steve led the organisation and delivery of four of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust's annual science conferences from 2008 to 2011 giving the lead keynote for specialist science colleges. He has given support and advice on secondary science education to governments and academics in countries including China, Japan and Kazakhstan.
