Mel Brimfield

Mel Brimfield is an artist working in film and live performance. The roots of her practice lie in her long-term commitment to devising support structures for the development and coherent presentation of interdisciplinary performance work. Operating as an independent curator and producer in the early part of her career, she devised projects ranging from gallery exhibitions, cabarets and performance festivals spanning several days, to radio and website broadcasts, book and CD publications, and short film productions and screenings for a variety of institutions and agencies.  Between 2006/2008, she was Associate Producer at the Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, and also founded Brown Mountain College of the Performing Arts with Sally O’Reilly and Ben Roberts.
Brimfield continues to rope in the services of a diverse range of performers to realise her own complex productions in galleries, theatres and at academic conferences, recently including 30-piece Dinnington Colliery Band with dance theatre company New Art Club, cabaret artist/theatre maker DIckie Beau, Italian Olympic gymnast Alice Capitani and songwriter Gwyneth Herbert.   Venues for recent and forthcoming exhibitions, residencies and performances include Camden Arts Centre, Whitechapel Gallery, John Hansard Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Henry Moore Institute, Liverpool Tate and Void Gallery (Derry).  She is represented by Ceri Hand Gallery, and is currently a Supported Artist at Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts.

More recent work adopts theatrical devising techniques for installations positing the gallery as a stage, with projection screens standing in for actors – collections of extended monologue scripts are also the basis of performances that increasingly appear in both visual art and theatre contexts. Interdisciplinary collaboration is at the core of my practice.  The ongoing creative partnerships I have developed with a diverse array of talented, highly respected performers enable a distinctive approach to the production of my work, and the modes of its presentation.
