Advisory Board Member for London Met's Guildhall School of Business and Law
Having obtained a BSc Economics Honours degree from the London School of Economics (LSE), John Garbutt entered the City in 1975 to work for Rowe & Pitman. He was subsequently employed by ICI, Touche Remnant, Schroders and became a director at Kleinwort Benson in 1987. He then worked at HSBC from 1991, where he was head of various departments and retired as director, Global Head of Corporate Governance in 2013. He is now a non-executive director of the Stobart Group.
John is alderman for Walbrook Ward, a court assistant of both the Weavers and Joiners & Ceilers Livery Companies and a liveryman of the International Bankers Company. He is president of the Ward of Walbrook Ward Club and a member of two others, Cheap and Coleman Street, as well as being chairman of the Parochial Church Council and a church warden of St Stephen Walbrook Church.
He is also involved in numerous UK and international charitable organisations, is a Justice of the Peace and a member of the Advisory Board of London Metropolitan University’s Guildhall School of Business and Law. John is also deputy chairman of International Students’ Trust, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of the Royal Geographical Society, a governor of Christ’s Hospital and a council member and a vice president of the City Livery Club. Furthermore, John is a council member of the Royal Society of St George (City branch) and a court assistant of the Guild of Freemen.
