The department’s overarching mission is a more inclusive and just society. With that in mind, our courses at postgraduate level encourage students to ask critical, probing questions with a focus on social improvement, the answers to which can, in turn, inform
policy formulation and debate.
We are developing a strong track record in providing a wide array of courses in criminology, child and woman abuse, community development, housing, public and mental health, information, media, regeneration, social work, social research and trade union studies. These are offered at various levels and exit points and with a strong interdisciplinary and inter-professional focus, as well as modes of delivery that are designed to meet
students’ and employers’ needs.
In developing and delivering our courses we seek ongoing dialogue amongst a growing network of professional and employer groups, including NHS trusts, trade unions, local authorities, voluntary organisations and the media sector, as well as the department’s specialist research centres, teaching staff and students.
These partnerships, in addition to our commitment to community engagement, ensure that our courses are relevant and reflect the most recent research evidence and policy changes.
