Overview

Aims of the course
This new MSc aims to give students a thorough understanding of spatial planning and housing strategy and the relationship between the two disciplines. The focus will be on the development of strategic plans and policy at national, regional and local authority level. The course focuses on theoretical and policy context and the technical knowledge needed to carry out spatial planning and housing strategy policy development and implementation within and in relation to the British national, regional and local governance structure. The course has a specific focus on London and the South East of England as a growth area and will also draw on the experience of other world cities.

The University is applying for accreditation by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a combined spatial planning and specialist course.

Normally an upper second-class Honours degree in a relevant subject.

Course contents

You will take six core modules, two optional modules and a dissertation of around 15,000 words.

Assessment
You are assessed via essays, individual and group projects and a final dissertation.

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in professional practice in both public and private sectors in the areas of spatial planning and housing strategy. Subject to RTPI accreditation, this course should contribute to students completing the course being eligible for full RTPI membership.
