Overview

Described by its external examiner as 'innovative and ground-breaking', this course is run by The Development School and validated by London Metropolitan University. The Development School is an NGO founded in 1999 to enable socially excluded peoples to direct their own processes of change to address issues of social justice they feel are relevant to their futures. This is achieved by strengthening capacity for developmental thinking and acting in the social world. The primary aim of this course is to enhance the capacity for effective social development practice amongst development practitioners and their organisations. This course helps you to understand and critically assess the prevalent frameworks, approaches and language of social development practice and to engage with social situations including facilitating group processes and dynamics. The course also enables you to locate your own practice within contrasting conceptual frameworks and approaches to social development.

Applicants should normally have extensive development experience and proficiency in written and spoken English. A commitment to social change, together with maturity, openness to learning and potential to respond to the demands the programme will make on their personal development, is also required.

Course contents

The course consists of six compulsory modules and a dissertation based on original research.

Compulsory modules:
  • Social Development Frameworks and Approaches
  • Reading and Making Meaning of Social Situations
  • Intervening in Social Situations
  • Self in Process
  • Frameworks and Principles for Professional Practice
  • Organisational Space for Development Practice

The dissertation is a self-study module.

Assessment

Assessment includes a group action research project, critical analyses of current affairs materials, oral and visual presentations, practical exercises and written self-reflective pieces. The dissertation of 10,000 words will be based on original research and will focus on the relationship between the theory and practice of social development within your own context.
