Aims of the courseThe MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as fulfilling the requirements for Part One of Chartered status. The team is committed to providing students with key practical skills, preparing them for future employment. This is achieved through the following: Providing a solid, up-to-date and contemporary knowledge base; adopting an experiential learning approach whereby students and the course team work as a ‘community of practice’, engaging in critical reflection and applying psychological knowledge to solve practical issues; gaining practical experience of the ‘Consultancy Cycle’ through our unique ‘Professional Practice Portfolio’ by working through a consultancy project, together with provision of workshops focusing on client needs, negotiation skills and diagnosis. To support the course, the department has an excellent test materials library, full access to SPSS, project rooms and access to good library resources. Professional supervision is provided and optional supervisory support is available post-MSc for members of the Division of Occupational Psychology to achieve Chartered status (an annual fee is chargeable). Visit our web page for more information. Entry requirementsApplicants should possess a good Honours degree in psychology. All students must have the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the BPS prior to joining the course; and have the intention of becoming a chartered occupational psychologist; plus some work experience. Proficiency in the English language is essential. If English is not your first language, you will require an IELTS 6.5 minimum with a minimum score of 6 in all components, TOEFL (old examination) 630, TOEFL (new examination) 267 or equivalent. All successful applicants are interviewed. Course structureCore modules cover the eight areas of occupational psychology, together with statistics and research methods and our skills-based Professional Practice Portfolio. The team has developed strong links with other EU-based universities and major employers within the field. There are, for example, opportunities for selected students to undertake dissertation research in Sweden with large institutions. This is growing year on year. Course modules (both semesters):

AssessmentAssessment is through practical coursework linked to core modules, examinations, a client tender and group presentation. Practical coursework may be used towards Chartered status. Collaborative and international linksWe offer a strong EU and international flavour and have links to University West, Sweden and University Luneberg, Germany for dissertation and research purposes. We also have strong ties with UK-based test publishers, external consultants and key employers; some of whom have collaborated with us on student projects. Many maintain a presence on the course by attending our professional conference day and seminar programme. Career opportunitiesSuccessful completion of this course, along with our external links with key employers and networking opportunities provided means many of our students have secured key posts within both the public sector (Metropolitan Police, JobCentre Plus, for example) and the private sector (KPMG, Kaisen Consulting, for example). The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study. |
