Overview

Media are central to our experience of the world, touching every aspect of our lives, shaping our cultural experiences, our encounters with others and our perceptions of the world. This course provides an opportunity to engage critically with the implications of this increasingly mediated reality. Led by world class researchers and educators in the field of media studies, this course will develop your critical understanding of the way media function in society, the structures, economics and practices of the media industries, the way they are regulated, the transformation to a digital, information society and the way that media inform our cultural identities.

The course is research-led, providing students with a first-hand encounter with innovative and cutting-edge research into the media, media institutions, forms and practices together with a lively engagement with current debates in the media studies field. The course covers a comprehensive range of media fields and technologies, including television, film, digital media, journalism and examines institutions from Hollywood to Pinewood and from Bollywood to Silicon Valley.

As well as providing a thorough grounding in the study of ‘traditional’ media forms—film, radio, television, print—this course also aims to advance students’ understanding of the current digital media landscape. The course combines theory and practice, with a theoretical core supplemented by industry-engaged modules that provide opportunities for learning industry-valued skills, interaction and experience with media practitioners.
