Overview

The Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law provides a law qualification in maritime and international trade law for those employed in shipping law firms, insurance, P&I and shipping companies. It is ideal for those who wish to gain shipping legal expertise and knowledge of its practical application.

Course contents

This distance-learning course comprises an introductory module covering the key concepts in English law necessary to maritime law, with nine substantive modules and one specialist optional module. Each of the core and specialist modules gives a rigorous consideration to one aspect of maritime and international trade law.

Introductory module (compulsory):
  • Introduction to English Law
Core modules include:
  • An Introduction to the English Legal System
  • English Commercial Law and the Inter-relationship of International Trade Contracts
  • International Sale of Goods
  • Bills of Lading Contracts
  • Charterparty Contracts
  • Marine Insurance
  • Maritime Law - Salvage, Collisions, General Average
  • Financing the International Sale of Goods
  • Litigation, Arbitration and ADR
  • Conflicts of Laws and Forum Shopping
Option module (choose one from):
  • EC Competition Law in Relation to Shipping
  • Government Influence/Intervention in International Trade
  • Oil and Chemical Pollution
  • Ship Finance Law

You do not attend lectures or tutorials at the University. However, during the course there are three seminar weekends held at the University. The seminars provide additional support for those able to attend. The seminars consist of lectures and tutorials on issues raised by the subjects covered in the course, affording you the opportunity to practise your skills of analysis and argument by active participation.

Assessment
The course is assessed by means of four pieces of written coursework (each worth 10%) and a final examination (worth 60%) consisting of two papers (one on the core modules and one on the specialist module).

Careers

Those who achieve the PGDip will be accepted onto the LLM course and can use their Diploma credits towards the LLM. Subject to successful validation, this LLM top up will process will also be available by distance learning.
