Aims of the course

The MSc in IT Consultancy will meet the need for postgraduate qualifications in this field by providing an academic base in the various aspects of consultancy with specific emphasis on IT. First, students will develop a critical understanding of relevant methodology and an appreciation of the development of IT systems and services at corporate, national and international levels. Secondly, students will develop an appreciation of the complex human and organisational aspects of working in the IT industry. Thirdly, they will develop the research, technical, communication, professional and other skills necessary for them to be immediately effective in the industry or in the research community.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have at least a lower second-class Honours degree in any subject and demonstrate an existing interest in IT and an acceptable level of computer literacy. Those with no first degree but have relevant professional qualifications or extensive professional experience will also be considered. Acceptance on to the course will be determined following interview.

International students are expected to meet the university English qualification requirements.

Course structure

The course consists of a mixture of core modules, the ability to choose specialist modules and a project.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of means including: applications design and development, demonstrations, research assignments, unseen examinations and workbooks.

Career opportunities

Through development of those areas referred to in the introduction above, successful students, more especially at Masters level, should be well placed to play either a broad based or specialist part in the IT consultancy arena whether it be as part of an existing IT-related company or as an independent consultant in their own right. In addition, the Masters degree provides a solid foundation for further academic work, including at PhD level, through its inclusion of elements dealing with research and development methodology.

On completion of the course graduates will be well equipped to work in a range of areas, such as: IT consultancy; IT management and business analysis; project management; e-learning and education and e-commerce.
