Overview

This unusual and highly specialised course allows you to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a complex but commercially important area. The course is centred on the needs of the modern professional lawyer working or intending to work in trade, transport and maritime related industries. The course of legal study is set in a specific context to provide you with a detailed knowledge, depth of understanding and practical insight.

Tuition through seminar participation will help develop the analytical, critical, communication and research skills upon which to build your career. A compulsory one week foundation course precedes the first semester to provide a foundation in commercial law, research and assessment technique.

Normally a UK or overseas degree in law of at least lower second-class or its equivalent. Alternatively, a non-law degree plus a professional legal qualification. Holders of the PG Diploma in Maritime Law (distance learning) awarded by this University will obtain 120 credits towards this specific LLM.

Course contents

There are two course structures. You have a choice: eight taught modules and a research essay or six taught modules and a dissertation. Common to both structures is the core module Researching Business Law.

Assessment

Assessment is through a mix of seen and unseen examination questions, coursework and research.

Careers

This degree provides highly specialised knowledge and research skills for legal practitioners and legal positions within trade, transport, maritime and insurance industries. A Masters degree is also a natural stepping stone towards a doctoral qualification.
