Overview

Tourism is increasingly looked to as a source of development and regeneration, both in the UK and internationally, and is an important development plank for many emerging economies and post-industrial regeneration strategies. Yet there is a difference between development of tourism, and development THROUGH tourism. Maximising the social and economic benefits requires a thorough understanding of tourism and development, the relationship between them, and the management interventions required.

The MA in International Tourism: Management and Development has been developed to provide a comprehensive grounding in the theory and practice in tourism, management and development. It provides a full understanding of the role of tourism in its global context, and an expertise in tourism systems and management strategies. This course exposes students to a variety of disciplines relevant to tourism, including destination management and marketing, environmental studies, geography, developmental theories, sustainable development and management, sociology and anthropology. Drawing on a variety of case studies and live projects, the course explores the local, national and global dimensions of tourism, management and development, and the nature and roles of different actors and agencies. The course also includes a one-week study visit to an international tourism destination.
