Overview

The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management aims to provide an opportunity for students to gain appropriate professional qualifications within the field of personnel/human resource management, in order to gain recognition for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) own awards. It also aims to provide an opportunity for obtaining higher education qualifications, including access to a Masters level award for those who seek it.

The 18 month part-time and 12 month full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management are aimed at practising and aspiring human resource professionals seeking to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of human resource activities.

The main educational aims of the course are as follows:

To provide an opportunity for applicants to gain appropriate professional qualifications within the field of human resource management.
To provide the opportunity for postgraduate education which benefits individuals across a wide range of occupations concerned with employment and human resource management, by enabling them to relate their practical experience to relevant theoretical and empirical research-based ideas and concepts.
To provide maximum scope for both professional and scholarly development.
To provide a sound theoretical basis for/and systematic understanding of people management together with a critical awareness of current issues and insights informed by people management practice.
To develop an appreciation and understanding of the nature and significance of the contexts influencing people management practices, processes and interventions.

A good bachelor’s degree (2.2) in any subject/ a three-year diploma in business that includes good grades in HR subjects. Students may be considered with HND/HNC or CPP/CTP or equivalent CIPD qualifications. Exceptionally, candidates with significant HR experience at a senior level may be considered. Interviews are generally required for non-standard entry. IELTS: Minimum of 6.

Course contents

The course consists of six taught modules. In the first semester only, there is also one Saturday team skills workshop, one afternoon/evening assessment preparation/taught session and a two-day (Friday and Saturday) block release to address business and HRM strategy and exam preparation.

  • Contextualising Management (20 credits)
  • The Reflective Practitioner (30 credits)
  • Consultancy, Change and Professional Development (10 credits)

Optional modules - choose two from the following:

  • Managing and Maximising Organisational Talent (20 credits)
  • Employment Law and Practice (20 credits)
  • Managing Employment Relations in Contemporary Organisations (20 credits)
  • Organisations – Design and Development (20 credits)
  • Leadership and Management Development (20 credits)
  • Learning and Talent Development (20 credits)

The Management Research Report is contained within the Reflective Practitioner module and is 7,500 words.

Assessment
Assessment methods include assignments written in report format, in essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a learning log, presentations, group work and exams, (though there are only two exams on the course, and both are in the first semester.) There will also be a Management Research Report and action learning set presentation, which carries 30 credits.

Careers

Students who obtain this Postgraduate Diploma fulfil the requirements of the CIPD’s Advanced Diploma (the CIPD’s highest academic qualification). Progression may be available to the MA Human Resources and Employment Management which can be successfully completed after one further year of part-time study.
