Overview

The Conversion Diploma is designed specifically for graduates who wish to become professional psychologists. The programme provides a thorough training in core psychology while providing an opportunity for you to pursue your particular interest. The course has British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). GBC is essential because it is a necessary prerequisite for entry onto postgraduate courses in the professional areas of psychology and for subsequent registration as a Chartered Psychologist.

Applicants must have a minimum 2:2 degree and either satisfactorily completed the Graduate Certificate in Psychology or have at least 60 credits of appropriate psychology (in the areas of social, developmental, cognitive and biological psychology and personality) at degree level. In addition applicants must also have Maths and English GCSE or equivalent at a minimum grade C. The minimum period of study for the Conversion Diploma and GBC is the equivalent of one year full-time. All exemptions must be approved by the Admissions Tutor prior to starting the course. The BPS requires all graduates to obtain a minimum of 50% overall in order to meet the criteria for GBC. Proficiency in the English language is essential. If English is not your first language, you will require an IELTS 6.5 minimum with a minimum score of 6 in all components, TOEFL (old examination) 630, TOEFL (new examination) 267 or equivalent.

You are required to conduct an independent empirical research study (project) as part of the final semester module, the Empirical Study. An academic member of staff will supervise your project and you will have access to the Department's modern research facilities, its extensive stock of test materials and technical support ranging from customised computer programmes to purpose-built electronic and mechanical devices.

The Conversion Diploma course is designed to be flexible and convenient. It is available as a full-time, mixed mode or part-time day course. You may choose the mode of study that best fits your needs; you may also switch between modes. You study the core areas of psychology that are required for GBC: biological, cognitive, personal, developmental and social psychology plus research methods. In addition you will be able to select an advanced option in an area of particular interest.

You are assessed with a range of methods including essays, practical reports, your independent empirical research project and end-of-module examinations.

Careers

The Conversion Diploma is designed specifically for graduates from other disciplines who wish to become professional psychologists - the course has BPS accreditation for GBC, which is essential if you wish to progress to other postgraduate programmes in professional areas of psychology, such as counselling, clinical, educational, forensic, health and occupational psychology leading to Chartered Psychologist status. You can also progress to research degrees.
