Overview

MA Film and Animation offers students a broad, practice- based approach to film and animation production addressing creative and commerical imperatives.

Students are encouraged to develop their media practice through the making of short films, engaging with a growing range of genres. You can specialise in drama, documentary, 3D animation or 2D animation or produce 'hybrid' film forms through the fusion of different techniques. Throughout the course students produce several short digital films- many of which have won film competitions and been screened at international festivals.

We encourage you to discover and exploit innovative uses of the technology and develop an awareness of the critical, cultural and contextual implications of the digital moving image in all its forms. The course also provides a thorough understanding of the principles and day-to-day practice of freelance and independent production or managing a small desktop digital studio. You are expected to crew on -or assist with- each other's productions and to work effectively as part of a team, drawing on your peers' expertise and experience. Creative production work is underpinned by a firm grounding in business skills and entrepreneurship.

Ultimately we offer you an opportunity to develop your technical, visual and narrative skills through practice, innovation and intellectual enquiry whilst being attuned to potential audiences, markets and employers.

In the Final Major Project Module you produce a final film in a based on a proposal developed during semester 2, leaving the course with a showreel of professional standard work in your preferred genre(s).

Topics include: 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Drama, Documentary Production, Character Animation, Experimental Film Production, MusicVideo

Assessment

The main method of assessment is the formative and ongoing 'crit' of practical exercises, presentations and the final production project. A case study based on a theoretical research project, various scripts, treatments and production reports are also required. Work is usually evaluated by staff and by your student peer group, as well as by industry professionals visiting the MA, or acting as course consultants.

Careers

Graduates typically gain employment in the creative industries such as film, broadcast, animation, post-production and games industry, as well as work as freelance film makers, animators or artists.

Others have progressed in their current jobs by securing promotions through their increased knowledge and experience. Many graduates have successfully set up their own production companies and/or have had their work screened at international festivals or events. You are encouraged to develop a showreel that targets a specified market for your work. Suitable graduates are also encouraged to progress to an MPhil or PhD, thus contributing research culture within the Faculty.
