Overview

The equality and diversity agenda, including such areas as gender, ethnicity, sexuality and disability, has become an integral part of both the organisation of labour and of the work of governmental and non-governmental institutions. The course is designed for those who wish to work as researchers, policy-makers and practitioners in these areas in both the UK and internationally. It is likely to be of interest to graduates in Sociology and Social Policy; Gender, Race, Ethnicity and Sexuality Studies; Human Resources Management and Business; Politics and Public Administration, as well as to equality practitioners in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

The course addresses the theoretical, analytical and policy challenges of diversity in the context of globalisation, labour migration and demographic changes, as well as the widening equality agenda that includes not only anti-discrimination legislation, but also issues of changing organisational cultures and attitudes, promoting a more productive work-life balance, and identifying, disseminating and encouraging best practice. The course thus offers the opportunity to gain high-level specialist skills in analysis, policy-making and practice that are necessary for effectively addressing the challenges of diversity in the 21st century, producing graduates whose professional practice is underpinned by a solid theoretical grounding. You will study theories of equality and diversity, management strategies and policy implementation, with an emphasis on case study analysis.

Student profiles

‘The MA in Equality and Diversity is a comprehensive and thought-provoking programme which has enhanced and complemented my job as a diversity practitioner. It provides an academic underpinning to organisational practices while challenging students to critically analyse them. Programme delivery is lively and engaging, and the tutors are supportive. Understanding the theoretical approaches has given me a better platform from which to formulate workplace policy and influence decisions.’

Anne Foster is Diversity Manager for the House of Commons

'The course has been fantastic; I really enjoyed the broad range of topics that I was able to cover. The tutors have all been so supportive, and have consistently challenged my perceptions and ability to critically analyse information. The mix of theory and practical application has ensured that I have been able to use the knowledge that I have gained to make real changes in my work place, through confidently communicating areas for development and practices that could be considered. The opportunity to network with individuals in similar roles has been very useful and I couldn’t recommend the course highly enough.'

The Equality and Diversity MA offered at London Metropolitan University is an excellent course that provides outstanding lecturers with invaluable academic expertise and practical experiences. The MA investigates issues of Equality and Diversity in its widest remit, exploring not only the traditional notions of inequality and discrimination, but focusing on how and why behaviours and discrimination are produced and reproduced. The modules allow you to specialise on specific areas of interest whilst ensuring your knowledge is not one dimensional as there is a great emphasis on understanding how different characteristics intersect with one another. I particularly enjoyed the great flexibility that the course offers, both in terms of assessment pieces and the modules on offer. This allowed me to tailor my modules in order that they were relevant to my current and potential employment. All of the academic staff I worked with were driven, supportive and encouraged the highest quality possible. I appreciated and valued this approach and believe it contributed greatly to my being awarded a Distinction. Further, as a result of being able to discuss and debate issues with fellow students and lecturers I was able to practically apply the knowledge and skills I gained directly into my employment. This built great confidence in my ability to challenge others and suggest ways forward on Equality and Diversity issues and assisted me in being successfully appointed as the Equality and Diversity Manager for the British Tennis Association.
