Attendance & duration

Full-time: 1 year, 2 days a week (Semester A classes will usually be on a Tuesday & Wednesday dependent on options chosen)

Part-time (eve): 2 years, 2 evenings a week (Semester A classes will usually be on a Tuesday & Thursday evening 6-9pm)

Part-time (other): flexible study is also available ie. part-time day/evening (dependent on options chosen). Holders of the Postgraduate Diploma HRM or equivalent are eligible for credit of up to 5 modules so enabling them to do the MAHREM top up.

PLEASE NOTE There is no official closing date for this course, but you are advised to apply as early as possible as we will only consider your application if there are places available on the course.

Aims of the course

The MA Human Resource and Employment Management course is aimed at those currently or aspiring to work in the HR or employment fields. Applicants may currently be working in relevant government departments, trade unions, national and international non-governmental organisations ie. voluntary and campaigning organisations, consultancy and academia. Human resource professionals and employment practitioners seeking to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of human resource activities will benefit from taking this course.

The course balances issues of public policy and organisational practice in the field with sound theoretical and research foundations. It also encourages you to specialise in your own area of occupational and academic interest through option choice and the completion of a dissertation. It provides an opportunity for students to gain a CIPD professional qualification within the field of human resource and employment management.

The work of the Comparative Organisation and Equality Research Centre and the Working Lives Research Institute support this course. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) Library, located in the University’s Learning Centre, and the Women's Library at our City campus are key study assets.

Entry requirements

Normally a good Honours degree (2:2), an equivalent qualification and/or ability to demonstrate suitability for study at postgraduate level.

Applicants with the University's Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management or an equivalent CIPD accredited postgraduate qualification from elsewhere may be eligible for transferred credit and obtain the MA ‘top up’ in one further year of part-time study.

Course structure

The course consists of three core modules, 3 designates and a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words.

The 3 core taught modules are:

  • Leading, Managing and Developing People
  • Contextualising Management
  • Research Methods in Employment Studies and HRM

Designated elective choices (Designate A) – 2 from the following:

  • Managing and Maximising Organisational Talent
  • Employment Law and Practice
  • Managing Employment Relations in Contemporary Organisations
  • Organisations – Design and Development
  • Leadership and Management Development
  • Learning and Talent Development

PLUS one elective from the list of designates above OR one from the list below (Designate B):

  • International Personnel and Development
  • Cross-Cultural Management
  • Human Resource Strategy
  • Comparative Employment Systems
  • Managing Diversity and Equality
  • Equality and Diversity Policy, Development and Implementation
  • Anti-Discrimination Law
  • Corporate Social Responsibility

Assessment

Assessment methods include assignments written in report format, in essay format, comparative analyses, learning contracts and logs, presentations, group work and exams. There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits, which is the equivalent of three taught modules.

Career opportunities

This course will enhance the careers of those in the HRM and broad employment practitioner field. Successful students are entitled to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s Advanced Diploma – their highest academic qualification – and prepared for a variety of careers in the HRM and employment field. They can also apply to develop your dissertation topic into an MPhil/PhD or Professional Doctorate.
