Overview

This course is designed for those who wish to pursue a career as a practitioner in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) within the NHS or in private practice, gain a wider spectrum of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in CBT and engage in research. The course offers training and supervision that will help you to develop clinical knowledge and practitioner skills in CBT. It will also provide opportunities to build and extend competence in conducting practice-related research in CBT. Its central aim is to bring professionals together from a range of backgrounds, but with a common interest in CBT, to encourage and support each other's personal and professional growth. Successful completion of this course contributes significantly towards accreditation as a cognitive behaviour therapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

The course is open to those graduate professionals who have significant experience in the mental health field and have access to clients. This may include: counsellors, nurses with recognised mental health qualifications, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers. Applicants should have a minimum of 2-3 years post-qualification clinical experience. Proficiency in the English language is essential. If English is not your first language, you will require an IELTS 6.5 minimum with a minimum score of 6 in all components, TOEFL (old examination) 630, TOEFL (new examination) 267 or equivalent. All successful applicants are interviewed.

Assessment
A range of methods are used including essays and clinical case studies as well as clinical placement reports and reviews. In addition, trainees complete a research project of around 15,000 words, which is assessed by submission of a written dissertation.
