Overview

The course is aimed at those interested in the performing arts, visual arts, museums, galleries, the art market, arts festivals, heritage sites, the historic environment, the businesses that supply services to these sectors and the public bodies that shape the direction and funding of the cultural sector. The course aims to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of arts and heritage management and an insight into contemporary trends in the sector. The MA AHM has a management focus including project planning and strategic thinking that can be applied throughout this area. Through visits, guest speakers and the optional work placement modules, students have the opportunity to meet and engage with arts and heritage practitioners.

The focus is partly on the individual organisation and the management skills needed (such as fund-raising or arts marketing) and partly on the environment in which the arts organisation operates. Here the arts are often a vital ingredient, as in the case of culture-based urban regeneration, cultural tourism and cultural planning. We take an international perspective and students from outside the UK can draw on their own experience in developing case study and dissertation topics.
