Overview

The aim of this course is to provide students who wish to pursue careers in this area, and those working in the addictions field, with an up-to-date scientific and academic knowledge of addiction. The course will also provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the main factors influencing addiction including biological, social, cultural, psychological and economic perspectives.

The minimum entry requirement is normally a lower second-class Honours degree in the area of health and/or human sciences e.g. psychology, medicine, biomedical science, nursing, health promotion or social work. Graduates from disciplines other than psychology who have extensive relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis. In addition, we require our applicants to be proficient in English. If English is not your first language, you will require an IELTS 6.5 minimum with a minimum score of 6 in all components, TOEFL (old examination) 630, TOEFL (new examination) 267 or equivalent.

The first stage of the application process is completion of the application form. At the second stage, all successful applicants are interviewed, allowing them to gain a greater understanding of our course and to meet the staff. Additionally, we also invite applicants to attend one of our regular open days where applicants can visit the university and talk to some of our current students and staff.

Course contents

The course is organised into three modules one of which is compulsory. Teaching takes place in the afternoon’s and evening’s of two days: Tuesday and Wednesday - depending on options taken.

  • Consequences of Addiction
  • Non-drug Addictions and Addiction in Special Populations
  • Biological Bases of Addiction
  • Treatment Options in Addiction

Teaching methods

The course is taught via a large range of different teaching methods including: lectures, seminars, class discussions, workshops, group work and individual supervision.

Assessment

Assessment is based on a combination of presentations, course work and examinations.

Careers

The course provides an opportunity for career progression for those already working within the field of addiction or cognate areas. The course also provides an excellent theoretical and practical knowledge for those wishing to pursue careers in addiction e.g. drug workers, specialist nurses, project workers.
