Overview

The MSc in Addiction and Mental Health is designed for all those with an interest in addictive behaviours and mental health. The course aims to provide students with a broad up-to-date advanced scientific and academic knowledge of addiction and mental health together with their subsequent impact on individuals and society.

The course will also provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the main factors influencing addiction including biological, social, cultural, psychological and economic perspectives. Students will also develop skills relating to the research, assessment, management and treatment of addiction. The course aims to make a contribution to training needs of all those who have a role to play in providing services within addiction across the health, social welfare, education and youth justice services and also provide an opportunity for career change.

Course contents

The course is organised into seven core modules which capitalise on the expertise of academic staff members within the Department of Psychology. Three modules are taught in the autumn semester with a further three modules being taught in the spring semester and a final research project module that spans autumn, spring and summer period (Spring, Sumer, Autumn for February entrants). Teaching takes place in the day and evenings of two days. The course is completed in one year if studied full-time and two years if studied part-time.

Teaching methods

Teaching is centred upon experiential learning including lectures, seminars, class discussions, workshops, group work and individual supervision.

Assessment

Assessment is formed of a combination of presentations, course work and examinations.

Careers

The course provides an opportunity for career progression for those already working within the addictions or cognate areas and also provides a theoretical and practical knowledge for those wishing to pursue careers relating to addiction.

The minimum entry requirement is normally be a lower second-class Honours degree in the area of health and human sciences e.g. psychology, medicine, biomedical science, nursing, health promotion or social work. Graduates from other disciplines who have extensive relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Proficiency in the English language is essential. If English is not your first language, you will require:

  • IELTS 6.5 minimum with a minimum score of 6 in all components
  • TOEFL (old examination) 630
  • TOEFL (CBT) 267 or equivalent
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 91 overall with a minimum of 21 in reading, 22 in listening, 23 in speaking and 21 in writing.
