Overview

Taught in the heart of one of the world’s major financial capitals, this course has been specifically designed for those in accounting and finance who want to keep pace with today’s rapidly changing business environment, or those wishing to move into this pivotal sector of the economy. The course takes a strategic look at current issues in the financial world, providing you with a range of skills, including the ability to critically analyse financial data and weigh up issues, and relate these to developments and shifts within the industry. The course provides a sound foundation for those seeking progression in a managerial or professional role, or for those wishing to undertake further postgraduate studies in a doctorate programme.

This programme provides students with the opportunity to study recent developments in accounting, financial analysis and financial management. In a background of increasing globalisation and the importance of a strategic perspective in business, the programme includes core modules, which focus on key relevant issues in the modern business world. This perspective is extended into a choice of a designate module, which enables further in-depth study in a particular area of interest.

Course contents

You will take five core modules, an optional module (which can be chosen in consultation with the Course Leader) and a dissertation of around 15-20,000 words.

  • International Business Finance and Investment
  • Research Methods in Accounting and Finance

  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Strategic Information Management

Assessment

Students will be exposed to various assessment strategies that are part of the development and evaluation of the above skills.

  • Formative assessment such as essay writing, case study analysis, presentation, group work will usually be accompanied by summative assessment such as unseen exams
  • All assessment methods are designed to test the student's actual level of skill achievements.

Careers

Graduates from the programme should move into a range of careers in the financial sector, including roles in finance departments in financial services and industry. Other career options may be roles in regulatory bodies, consultancy and audit.

Applying and entry

PLEASE NOTE There is no official closing date for this course, but you are advised to apply as early as possible as we will only consider your application if there are places available on the course.

Entry to the course will normally require one of the following:

  • a good (first or upper-second class) degree in accounting or finance
  • a good (first or upper-second class) business degree with a specialisation in accounting or finance
  • a good (first or upper-second class) business-related degree plus at least the foundation stage of a professional accounting qualification
  • part-qualification from one of the professional accounting institutes - normally at least up to paper F9 for ACCA, CIMA Management level, or equivalent from ICAEW or CIPFA

Applicants with full professional accounting qualifications will be exempt from the first two core accounting modules (see below).

Students for whom English is not their first language must demonstrate sufficient fluency in both written and spoken English. The minimum requirement is one of the following:

  • IELTS 6 min. with a min. of 6 in speaking and writing and 5.5 in listening and reading
  • TOEFL (old examination) 600 minimum
  • TOEFL (new examination) 250 minimum.
