Tourism course recognised by national professional network

London Met is one of only three London universities to be officially recognised by the Tourism Management Institute.

Date: 6 October 2016

Earlier this week, BA Tourism and Travel Management received official recognition from the Tourism Management Institute.

The Tourism Management Institute (TMI) is the professional body for destination management practitioners, with members drawn from all levels of the private and public sectors: national, regional, sub regional and local. As the destination management section of the Tourism Society, TMI seeks to support professional development within the sector, for potential entrants as well as existing practitioners.

Assessment and recognition by TMI means that students can be confident the course will provide them with knowledge, understanding, skills and experience which will fully prepare them for a career in tourism destination management.

The recognition means that students on this course will have a discounted TMI membership allowing access to events, professional development courses, jobs and a global networking database.

The recognition puts London Met students ahead of their competitors and elevates their career prospects as it allows access to student placement opportunities, furthering London Met’s commitment to work related learning.

The assessor feedback noted the course “gives a thorough grounding and progression in the core knowledge and skills for students to become effective destination management practitioners.”

Dr Ela Rogers, BA Tourism and Travel Management course leader, said: “I am so pleased we have been awarded this recognition. This comes as a result of everyone on this course’s hard work and dedication to our students and ensuring they have the best possible outcome.”

As one of the many benefits of the TMI recognition, final year students will be able to submit their placement report in order to be considered for the David Hughes Memorial Award.

Launched in 2012 in memory of former TMI President David Hughes, the award is presented to students who submit a report to demonstrate what they learned on their placement, how they applied the knowledge gained from their coursework to the workplace, and the impact this had on their personal and professional development.

There are only three universities in London who have received this recognition.
