A Day of Making News

An exploration of how making inspires design.

A Day of Making is a series of lectures organised by London Met’s interiors team which explore and investigate the links between, and the necessity of, making to design practitioners.

On Wednesday 18 November 2015 four lectures presented over a single day will look at model making in a modern age, 3D printing, model making within architecture and how to design in two dimensions for a three dimensional world.

Simon Hamnell a professional model maker at Millenium Models starts the day with 'Turning 2D plans into 3D Buildings', followed by Mark Lim, product designer and model maker and founder of Chalk Studios, who will explore '3D printing now and in the future'.

Owen Rutter, architecture workshop manager from Greenwich University will open the afternoon session examining 'Making for the Architectural Industry' and Mehran Gharleghi from international architecture and design research studio studio INTEGRATE will present a talk on 'Designing for a 3D world.'

The Speakers: 

Simon Hamnell, Millenium Models
Simon has over 25 years experience of building models and prototypes for leading architects and designers such as Renzo Piano, Ron Arad, Tate Modern and Rogers Stirk Harbour. He has an unrivalled expertise in production methods and a wealth of knowledge that comes from working on some of the most iconic design projects in the part quarter of a century.

Mark Lim, Chalk Studios
Mark studied BAs in both Product Design and Model Making. He founded Chalk Studios in 2010, and has spent over 10 years designing and making solutions for some of the worlds’ most prestigious companies including The Wellcome Trust, The V&A Museum and Olgivy. In his spare time he is a lecturer at Central Saint Martins.

Owen Rutter, Greenwich University
Over ten years of working in the design industry as a designer and maker, Owen has been part of some very talented art and design teams working on innovative projects, including industrial prototyping for world sailing speed records, the development of internationally renowned art pieces for Anish Kapoor and award winning architectural projects like ‘Gardens by the Bay’ in Singapore.

Mehran Gharleghi, studio INTEGRATE
Mehran Gharleghi is an architect, researcher and designer. In 2011 he co-founded studio INTEGRATE. His work employs sophisticated design and analysis tools along with rigorous studies in culture, materiality, and environmental issues. It attempts to establish new relationships with the built environment and ultimately to lead towards novel spatial experiences.
