Longer opening hours and new equipment for London Met’s sporting facilities

The extended gym opening hours will help students interact in a fun social environment, and unwind during exam preparation period.

Date: 12 March 2015

From 16 March, the sporting facilities at London Met will operate extended opening hours, giving more flexibility to gym goers.

The Holloway campus gym will now be open until 10pm on weekdays, and 6pm on weekends. The Aldgate campus gym will also be open for longer, closing at 9pm in the week and 6pm on Saturdays.

John McBennett, London Met’s Sports Manager, said: “We are always working to provide the platform where our students and staff can meet and train in a modern, comfortable and social environment.

“The extended opening hours will benefit students and staff across the University.”

The extended hours align with the building and library opening times, so that students preparing for their exams can use the facilities to wind down and take breaks at a time that is convenient for them.

"We feel that it is a great investment opportunity for the sports department at London Met”, John added.

“We strongly believe that it will play a major role in serving, promoting and further enhancing health and wellbeing amongst our staff and students.”

New equipment

The Holloway Road sporting facilities have also recently been upgraded, with £55,000 invested in new gym equipment.

The Science Centre gym now has four new spin bikes, a new elliptical cross trainer, as well as new dumbbells and resistance training equipment. In addition to this, all the treadmills have been replaced.

Aldo Lena, an MSc Sports Therapy student at London Met said: “The new equipment in the gym is high quality, and has already proven to be very helpful.

“It will also decrease the waiting time for using the equipment. I think students will really benefit from this.”

The equipment was installed shortly after the University reopened after the Christmas holidays, and was supervised by Konstantinos Gogos, Sports Performance and Development Officer at London Met.

“It was a team effort”, Konstantinos said, “and it will allow our competitive sports teams to prepare more efficiently for their league matches.

“It also serves as the bridge to link the University with the members of the community.”

The team is now hoping to carry out refreshment work at the Gym in Central House.
