London Met Student’s Passport to Employment

The Assessment and Development Centre gives students a unique opportunity to raise their potential for future employment.

Date: 31 March 2015

On Monday 30 March, students from across the University were invited to attend the first Passport to Employment - Assessment and Development Centre, a mock-assessment event where they got to experience a real-life recruitment situation.

The event was organised with the Windsor Fellowship, a charitable organization that delivers personal development programmes, helping graduates improve their skills and confidence, and succeed in their studies and careers.

The aim of the event was to prepare students for real recruitment and assessment processes they may face when applying for jobs in the future.

Neelam Thapar, Head of Careers and Employability, said: “It can be daunting to go to a recruitment centre, especially for the first time.

“This event gives students an opportunity to experience an assessment centre-like situation in real life, in a safe environment.”

Students listened to keynote speeches and participated in group exercises and presentations. External facilitators from the Windsor Fellowship assessed students and their teams on their team work, communication, and presentation skills.

Brian Channer, Social Entrepreneur and one of the facilitators, said: “It is important for students to be exposed to this as soon as possible, and as often as possible.

“It helps them move past the fear, and to a point where they can actually learn how to prepare themselves.”

A great experience

The event was a success, with many students expressing how this will benefit them in the future.

Josephine Mensah, a Criminology and Law student, described the event as “very interesting and helpful,” whereas another student studying Criminology and Psychology, Urszula Bankiewicz, said: “It was a great experience. It helped me get more familiarized with the process of applying for and getting a job.”

Students will get feedback based on their performance that can help them when applying for a job post-graduation, as well as a certificate, and attendance will be recorded on their degree transcript.
