Lisa Day recognised by internationally renowned professional body

Paper by London Guildhall lecturer accepted into the programme of the Academy of Management’s annual conference.

Date: 16 April 2015

A conference paper written by Lisa Day, a senior lecturer in strategy at London Metropolitan University’s Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law will be presented at the Academy of Management’s annual meeting.

The paper titled ‘Over the Top of the Hill: Sensemaking and the Role of Meetings in Sustaining Strategic Change’ is an in-depth study conducted over two years, with over hundred interviews and site-visits, of how an organisation is able to implement and sustain strategic change.

Meetings are the main subject of the study, and how a business unit leader, with a strong vision and determination, was able to set up a forum for effective communication and cooperation that built new relationships and a shared culture alongside a focus on moving the organisation forward.

The Academy of Management is the premier professional association for management and organisation academics. Lisa's conference paper was named as one of this year’s Best Papers and an abstract from Lisa’s paper will be published in the proceedings of the Academy’s 75th annual meeting, a conference of 10,000 students, academics and professionals, to be held in Vancouver this August.

“I am absolutely delighted,” said Lisa on receiving news of the Best Paper award.

“I was really pleased to get the paper accepted. It’s the sort of email you read three times thinking you’ve misread it! It’s a real boost after five years of studying for my PhD and it’s great to have that work recognised.”

Lisa joined London Met in 2006 after an eighteen year career in management. Lisa started out at Marks & Spencer as a Management trainee and went on to work in strategy at Abbey National, now Santander, and BT.

Lisa herself has been a student at London Met. She studied both her Diploma in Management and her MA in Learning and Teaching at London Met.

Lisa’s paper forms one part of her PhD which she is undertaking part-time at the University of Bath while teaching on the London Met’s MBA, MA in Management and Strategic Leadership and undergraduate Business Management courses. Lisa was recognised by the University’s Students’ Union as the Faculty of Business and Law’s Outstanding Tutor in their student-led teaching awards last year.

Professor Stephen Perkins, Dean of the London Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law, commented: "Congratulations Lisa on such an impressive achievement. I am immensely proud of her and all of the achievements of our lecturers and researchers that enhance the teaching and course curriculum at London Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law.
