Animation students light up London

Cass animators behind exciting Christmas display in Surbiton

Date: 17 November 2014

An iconic building in a corner of the capital will have a life of its own this Christmas thanks to animation students at London Met.

Surbiton’s iconic Art Deco station will be transformed by BA Animation and MA Animation students as part of the Borough of Kingston’s festive illuminations.

The students, from the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design (The Cass) at London Met, have collaborated to project moving images onto the building, transforming its windows into digital stain glass, and walls into animated origami.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for us,” said Mark Collington, Course Leader for animation at The Cass. “Working on architectural projects is just one example that shows how progressive the work of our animators is. We are also very lucky to have an ongoing partnership with a range of imaginative organisations, including South West Trains and Creative Youth Kingston.”

The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design is internationally recognised for its high quality teaching, excellent facilities and unique interdisciplinary opportunities.

Learning through practice, playing with process and working with clients, students at The Cass gain real world experience in both individual and collaborative projects, engaging with professionals, communities and companies.

The animation course is designed to appeal to those who are interested in taking a more conceptual approach to animation practice in the broader context of film, art, design and architecture. Workshops and studio projects enable undergraduates to expand thinking about animation as a set of skills that can be applied to a range of new and emerging professional practices, as well as more established career paths.

The project in Surbiton is one of a series of animation live briefs with high profile clients in the capital. Last year The Cass animation studio created a 3D Zoetrope for the Museum of London which brought alive artefacts from their Thomas Becket Pilgrim Badge collection, exhibited as part of Digital London.

Surbiton's station will come alive when the Christmas lights are turned on at a special event on Thursday 27 November.
