Enterprise conference gives students a career boost

Accelerator, London Met’s Business Incubator hosted a creative career day to kick start the search for valuable internships and experience during summer.

Date: 06 July 2014

Accelerator, London Metropolitan University's business incubator, hosted a day-long conference to help enterprising students learn more about building their careers and businesses.

The ‘Now or Never: Creative Career Day’ was aimed at students and graduates who are working on small businesses or are interested in starting one up. Run as part of Accelerator's Creative Enterprise Month, the event gave students new ideas, skills and valuable contacts to boost their careers.

Recent London Met graduates like Roxanne Reynolds from ARTAM and Liam Rollings from The Design Wire shared their experience and advice with students and current businesses based in Accelerator, which is located in Shoreditch in the heart of London's Tech City.

There were also Q&A sessions with other start-ups and businesses.

Tim Brownstown from Kymira Sport (founded in 2013) presented a Fashion Industry talk, and the rest of the day included discussions on topics such as 'sell your product', 'run an online business' and 'getting paid'.

Valuable experience, countless possibilities

Frances Brown, from Accelerator, said: “The Now or Never! Creative Careers Day was a brilliant opportunity for London Met students and graduates to come face to face with those in industry.  We heard insider tips and realities of working and running businesses in the creative industries from those with experience and had the chance to chat to them informally throughout the day too.

“It was a really lively day and I know both the speakers and the students got a lot from it.  We hope to repeat the event next year.”

London Met strives to create the best possible foundations for students to build their careers on after graduation.

The Careers and Employability team at London Met provides a range of services including individual advice and guidance, skills workshops, employer presentations, jobs fairs and careers conferences, but also host a lot of other activities to make sure that our students are well prepared for making an immediate impact on the job market,” said Fiona Tracey, Senior Careers Consultant at London Met.
